In 2022, CNC lathe manufacturer, CMZ established itself as Vicaya's leading supplier of machine tools. It also ranks sixth in Spain out of 140 audited companies in the sector. The data came from the recent sector report from Empresa XXI which analysed Profit and Loss accounts to provide a comprehensive overview of the industry in Spain.
A report on the Machine Tool sector in Spain produced by Empresa XXI surveying of over 800 companies, shows how the market has grown in the last five years. After a recovery period, in 2022, sales surged above pre-covid levels to total 3,232 million euros. The data for 2018 and 2019 were 3,168 and 3,098 million euros, respectively. Furthermore, the growth in sales extended to most surveyed companies, a further indication of the sector's ability to innovate and adapt to market needs.

In this context, CMZ leads the ranking, and became Vizcaya's top-selling machine tools company in 2022 out of the 140 companies audited by Empresa XXI. In general, the top places on the list are held by companies in the Basque Country, evidence of the area's long tradition as a business hub. The province of Guipuzcoa has nine companies among the top twenty and CMZ has emerged as the leading company in the province of Vizcaya with sales of 80.5 million and is in sixth place nationwide. This data is for only one of the group's business names (CMZ Machine Tool Manufacturer, S.L.) which saw a 25 percent increase in sales in relation to 2019.
The report also shows the employment data for each of the companies in the ranking. One of CMZ's values is its commitment to European manufacturing and having control of most of the production process. From this perspective, the company produces over 80 percent of the components for its lathes at its own facilities and so its human capital is essential. Thus in 2024, the group has over 525 employees throughout the 6 European subsidiaries. This represents a 15 percent increase in relation to 2021 and shows sustainable growth in accordance with market demand.
With the focus on manufacturing 800 lathes a year and working towards and increasing production capacity to 1,000 machines a year, the company has formalised the purchase of a plot of land of over 22,000m2 in Berriz (Vizcaya) where it will build its eighth manufacturing plant.
In 2023, CMZ exceeded the sales forecast in the 2021-2023 Strategic Plan by 10 percent, to achieve a turnover of 110 million euros. This unprecedented figure is a further indicator of growth in the machine tools sector and the high demand for lathes.
CMZ's financial performance in 2022 made it Vizcaya's leading company in the sector and is one of its significant achievements. In the competitive machine tool market, where outsourcing and multinationals are increasingly present, the company is committed to a European product and comprehensive control over manufacture. Eighty years later, CMZ continues to be committed to offering powerful, robust, reliable CNC lathes to the market through a process that is one hundred percent its own and European.
